This is what started it all! When I was 9 I fell in love with Sailor Moon and drew this to express my fascination. And it snowballed from there until I went to art school and now I’m an art director, designer, and marketing professional. So glad I got better after this.

(This is my post from a couple days ago with a few edits and some additional information.)
I wanted to make a quick post about this since it didn’t hit me until this morning that those of you unaccustomed to anime PVs (trailers) have no idea what to expect from them. (I’m strictly focusing on the first released PVs for shows.) Just a side note, I understand that the overall quality of animation largely depends on the studio and their budget for their project. These are just examples! Thanks! (If for some reason the videos don’t show up on your phone or device, please click the links provided.)
First off, I’m sure we’ve all seen this at least a million times by now (I know I have!) - the PV for Sailor Moon Crystal

Direct link to trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9Ft3viBgtQ
While the PV is one minute and twenty seven seconds long, we only see seconds of actual animation. We see our beloved Usagi getting ready (which looks gorgeous), her running, Luna jumping, Usagi’s flowing fuku and hair, Luna jumping, some surprised faces (which involve gorgeously flowy hair), a closeup of her tiara, her with a bad bitch smile closeup, and of course, her famous speech at the end.
Considering how anime PVs usually work, this is actually a lot of information to be shared with us; however, at the same time, we’re also seeing very, very little. I didn’t realize it until this morning, but I learned a lot of you unaccustomed to anime PVs think anime PVs contain some of the best moments of animation. Most of the time, this is very, very untrue. Especially for the first released PV. (Most anime have two PVs - some even have three before the show is released.) A large chunk of PVs actually show no animation at all. And if they do show animation, it’s very, very rarely the best animated moments. (I think that’s more of a Hollywood thing, honestly.) I mean, we didn’t see Sailor Moon’s transformation/attacks for a reason! There are tons of examples for PVs I could share with you, but considering the popularity of Kill La Kill, I’m going to share the first PV for Kill La Kill with all of you first.

No animation from the show actually exists in this trailer. Just some shots of buildings and the main characters floating by. A very decent sized chunk of anime PVs only share this amount of information for their first PVs. (Something like this was actually what I was expecting for the Sailor Moon Crystal trailer.) While I enjoyed Kill La Kill, the animation quality leaves something to be desired (particularly in the first half) because of their lack of funding for Trigger being a new studio etc etc. But that’s an argument for a blog unrelated to Sailor Moon. haha

Haikyuu is currently airing now, and I think we can all agree, that for the most part, the animation looks pretty darn nice. You would never know from this PV.

Noragami was released last season and managed to pick up a pretty decent sized fan base, so I’m hoping some of you might have seen it or come across it here on tumblr. There’s two reasons why I’m sharing this one. First of all, we see a very limited amount of animation - much like the SMC trailer, and those of you who have seen Noragami, know that the fight scenes are pretty darn good. Second of all, those of you who have seen this also know the show is not as serious as the PV makes it out the be. From this PV, you would never know comedy exists in a good portion of every episodes where characters split from their regular/serious appearances to well…scenes like this pretty frequently:

I know a lot of you are upset about Usagi’s lack of expression/emotion in the Sailor Moon Crystal PV. Just because they’ve shown us a few shots of her face basically looking like :o - doesn’t mean we aren’t going to get the comedy which appeared in both the original anime and the manga. Yes, I definitely think SMC is going to be much more serious, mature, and elegant than the original anime; however, even the manga had moments where the characters lived a slice-of-life like life (kind of like we’ve seen in that magazine shot which was recently released). Just don’t expect too many sweat drops, anger symbols, etc. Considering the original Sailor Moon anime began airing in the early 90s, a lot has changed in the anime world since then. A lot of the crazy wacky moments seen in a lot of older shows don’t really exist as much in modern day anime (unless we’re talking about a comedy/romcom). I’m not saying they don’t exist at all, since that’s entirely untrue. It’s just that the extreme expressions we’re accustomed to from the original Sailor Moon are a lot more uncommon in modern day anime. So don’t expect to see a lot of stuff that might look like this for example:

I understand entirely if you’re just not feeling the look of the characters for Sailor Moon Crystal. That can’t be helped, and no one can force you to like something. I completely understand and respect your opinions whether it’s about the “thin bodies”, “alien heads”, etc etc which I addressed in my previous post here. But regarding the lack of Usagi’s expressions - that can’t be fairly judged until we see the first episode (or a second PV which will hopefully share a little more with all of us in that regard).
Anyway, I hope that helped some of you who don’t regularly keep up with anime! I know a lot of you feel like we’re being cheated by Toei since the announcement came for the new Sailor Moon two years ago, and you’re unhappy with the product as it was delayed over-and-over. But I think you also need to realize it probably wasn’t being animated over the course of the past two years. A lot of other work is involved (including Naoko Takeuch’s approval on everything). And it’s not uncommon for shows or films to be delayed because of DRASTIC changes. This recently happened with Pixar’s new film The Good Dinosaur, for a recent example. So for all we know they spent a year on SMC and scrapped it. Anyway, I’m excited for Sailor Moon Crystal, and I love the trailer. And overall, I’m just happy that Naoko Takeuchi and the Sailor Moon Crystal staff are giving this to us.
I hope that this post was able to put the PV for Sailor Moon Crystal in perspective for some of you!

I remember Madoka Magica’s PVs being even more bare. I remember seeing them while watching another series and thinking “I have no idea what this show is going to be about”….boy was I in for a surprise.http://youtu.be/qTeM68aOpMM
